A security system’s core promise is that it will detect and report threats. That promise is only as trustworthy as the system’s ability to also detect and report attempts to interfere with itself — without tamper detection, a disabled camera or cut sensor cable can simply go unnoticed rather than trigger an alert, defeating the system’s purpose at precisely the moment it matters most.

Common Tamper Detection Methods

Enclosure tamper switches, typically mechanical or magnetic, detect when a camera housing, control panel, or junction box has been opened without authorization, immediately generating an alert distinct from a normal operational event. Cable supervision, used on wired alarm and access control circuits, monitors for changes in electrical resistance along a cable run, detecting cuts, shorts, or unauthorized splices that would otherwise silently disable a sensor or door contact.

Modern video analytics platforms include tamper-detection algorithms that flag when a camera’s view has been obscured, defocused, redirected, or covered — distinguishing between a legitimate scene change (like a parked truck temporarily blocking part of a view) and a deliberate attempt to blind the camera, based on how abruptly and completely the change occurs. These algorithms are tuned to balance sensitivity against false alarms from ordinary environmental changes like fog, rain, or spider webs on the lens.

Power and Communication Supervision

Beyond the sensor itself, tamper resistance extends to the power and communication paths that keep a sensor reporting: battery-backed systems detect AC power loss and communication supervision detects when a device stops checking in on its expected schedule, both of which can indicate a device has been physically disconnected or its network connection deliberately severed rather than simply malfunctioning.

Where Tamper Detection Gets Skipped

Tamper detection is frequently the first feature dropped from a security system design under budget pressure, since it adds cost without providing any day-to-day operational benefit — it only demonstrates value in the relatively rare event that someone actually attempts to defeat the system. Facilities with genuine adversarial threat models, rather than purely accidental-event concerns, should treat comprehensive tamper detection as a core requirement rather than an optional add-on, since it directly addresses the threat scenario where a determined intruder specifically targets the security system itself before proceeding.

Conclusion

Anti-tamper capability doesn’t make a security system detect more events; it makes the system harder to defeat without detection, which is a fundamentally different and, for adversarial threat models, equally important property. Evaluating a security system’s tamper resistance alongside its detection capability gives a more complete picture of how the system will actually perform against a determined attempt to disable it, not just against routine events.
