Nvidia Invests $5 Billion in Intel to Co-Design Chips

September 18, 2025 — Nvidia agreed to invest $5 billion in Intel and said the two companies would jointly develop chips for PCs and data centers, sending Intel shares up sharply.

What happened

Nvidia bought Intel common stock at $23.28 per share, taking a stake of more than 214.7 million shares. The companies said they would connect Nvidia and Intel architectures using NVLink, with Intel building Nvidia-custom x86 CPUs for integration into Nvidia’s AI infrastructure platforms and Intel using Nvidia graphics technology in future PC chips.

Why it matters

The investment came weeks after the US government took a roughly 10 percent, nearly $9 billion stake in Intel and after a $2 billion investment from SoftBank, reflecting an unusual level of direct government and competitor involvement in stabilizing a struggling but strategically important chipmaker.

Security and infrastructure impact

A tighter Nvidia-Intel relationship could reshape the competitive landscape for data-center CPUs and AI accelerators that underpin everything from cloud AI training to the video-analytics servers used in physical-security systems.
