IDScan, whose in-person identity verification systems are used by bars, dispensaries, rental car companies and retailers including Hertz, FedEx and Target, confirmed that hackers stole driver’s license and government-ID data from its cloud systems, TechCrunch reported.
The confirmation follows a September 2 report that a dark-web marketplace called “Nexus” was selling scans of 153 million licenses. The FBI’s New Orleans field office and the Pentagon are both reportedly involved in the response, according to The Record (Recorded Future News), which independently corroborated the breach.
Why it matters: ID verification systems sit at physical access points across a huge range of everyday commercial locations, making a breach at this scale a direct exposure of government-ID data collected specifically for identity-verification purposes — the kind of data that is both highly sensitive and difficult for affected individuals to simply reissue or change.
